What an Etsy sale actually costs, at several price points
These are not illustrative figures. Every row below was produced by the Etsy fee calculator on this page, at default settings, with the buyer paying nothing towards shipping.

Notice the effective rate falling as the sale price rises: 11.32% on a $25 sale against 9.59% on a $500 one. That is the fixed per-transaction charge being spread across a bigger sale. Small items are where fees bite hardest, and that is exactly the range sellers underestimate.
Add shipping the buyer pays and the numbers move again — on most platforms the selling fee is charged on that too. Put your real figures into the calculator above rather than reading a number off this table.
How the Etsy fee is worked out, step by step
If you would rather do this on paper than trust a box on a web page, here is the whole calculation.
1. Pay to list, before you sell anything
$0.20 per listing, covering 4 months or until the item sells. Unlike every other fee here you pay this whether or not the item ever sells, and again each time the listing renews.
2. Apply the transaction fee
6.5% on the item price, shipping and gift wrap (US sellers: not sales tax). Shipping sits inside that base, so charging for shipping separately does not keep it out of Etsy's cut.
3. Apply payment processing on top, separately
3% + $0.25 on the order total including tax and shipping. This is a second, independent fee — not a part of the 6.5%. Anyone budgeting on "Etsy takes 6.5%" is short by roughly a third.
4. Check whether Offsite Ads applied to the order
15% under $10,000 of trailing sales, 12% above it, capped at $100 per order. Your tier is set on the 1st of each month from your trailing 365-day sales. Under $10,000 you can opt out. Once you cross it you are enrolled permanently at 12%, even if sales later fall back down.
5. Subtract your own costs to reach real profit
Fees give you the net payout. Profit is what survives after what the item cost you and what shipping cost you. A sale can clear Etsy's fees comfortably and still lose money once the label is paid for — the last two boxes in the calculator exist for exactly that reason.
What this Etsy fee calculator deliberately leaves out
These are real Etsy costs that we do not fold into the figure above, because they follow from choices you make rather than from the sale itself. Ignoring them is how a listing that looked profitable turns out not to have been.
- Etsy Ads (on-site) — You set the daily budget, so it cannot be expressed as a rate per sale. It is separate from the Offsite Ads fee handled above.
- Etsy Plus — A monthly subscription that buys listing credits and ad credit. It does not reduce the transaction fee or the payment processing fee.
- Regulatory operating fee — Charged in some countries at rates that vary by jurisdiction. We have not published a number, because we could not verify one that applies to US sellers, and an invented rate is worse than an acknowledged gap.
Everything we do include carries a source link in the section above. Where a rate could not be confirmed from Etsy itself, it is named here as a gap rather than filled in with a guess.

Read this as a fee comparison, not a recommendation. eBay settles through its own managed payments now, so eBay sales no longer run through PayPal. This page is for the other cases — your own store, selling direct on social, or invoicing a client. And a marketplace charging more that actually puts your listing in front of buyers can still be the better place to sell — fees are one input to that decision, not the decision itself.
